What is the toxic element in grapes(to dogs)?
Answers:
Nobody is really sure exactly what it is about grapes that makes them toxic to dogs. It's been confirmed that even grapes grown without pesticides or fertilizer can be fatal to dogs. Nobody can even confirm the result of small amounts injested over long periods of time.
It is known that grapes cause renal (kidney) failure in dogs. It can only take a handful of grapes/rasins to make a dog sick. But anything in the neighborhood of 2lbs can be fatal. ASPCA has only reported 10 cases, and only 5 survived.
Beware of Toxicity in Raisins: It鈥檚 Not Just an Urban Legend
Food is a commonly-used motivator. Pet owners naturally enjoy giving treats to their dogs. We reward them for a good deed, for being cute, or for fighting the temptation to jump up on our houseguest. We have a tendency to reward them when we reward ourselves. With society鈥檚 current focus on healthy eating, grapes and raisins are a common snack to enjoy. And why not? They are sweet, tasty, and are a guilt-free treat. We seem to have the mindset that if a food is healthy for us that it won鈥檛 harm our pet but we couldn鈥檛 be more wrong.
Originally thought to be an urban legend, it is now known that raisins and grapes are indeed toxic to dogs. In fact, since the early 2000s there have been documented cases proving that some dogs have toxic reactions to these fruits. The type of grape and the type of dog doesn't seem to matter, and the toxic amount may be a small serving to several ounces. Some dogs naturally love eating raisins and grapes and will seek them out; from the pantry or growing in a vineyard. Pet owners have used raisins as a training treat, and some have mistakenly used them as a "healthy" snack alternative for their dogs.
Exactly what causes this toxicity is not completely understood, but it is the subject of ongoing studies. At this time, ALL cases of grape and raisin ingestion in dogs need to be taken seriously. For dogs suffering from a toxic reaction, the first visible sign is usually vomiting. Vomiting can begin a few hours after ingestion and partially digested grapes or raisins may be visible in the expelled matter. Other signs of toxicity are diarrhea and excessive drinking of water. These two signs can also signify the beginning stages of acute renal failure. After 24 hours or so, the dog may be come anorexic and/or lethargic. Additionally the abdomen may be painful and the dog will cease urinating. Ultimately, the kidneys fail, and without aggressive treatment, the outcome is often times fatal.
Early treatment is the best treatment. If the raisin or grape ingestion was 2 hours or less, the veterinarian will want to induce vomiting to rid the body of the toxin and then administer activated charcoal to absorb any remaining toxins. Aggressive intravenous (IV) fluid therapy is required to keep the kidneys in good health. Additional kidney medications may be indicated, depending on the patient. In essence, early treatment is critical because death from renal failure can occur without intervention.
Be selective when giving treats to your canine companion. Lambriar Vet Supply offers many delectable treats that are designed explicitly for your dog including Pegetables, Liver Nuggets, Liver Snackers, and Sniffers. So remember, only give your pets treats that are formulated specifically for them and save the real food for yourself.
I heard the toxin was in the skin, not the grape itself, but after reading the above answer, I wouldn't risk it...
not sure,, mine have been eating them for years.. at least 20years... guess i have been lucky... of course, i don't over do it..
What is the top dog food in the american market?
Answers:
Royal Canin or Canadae are the best and are NOT on the recall list
Why do you ask this? There are many huge and High Quality foods.
I will list many good brands but have no way of saying who sells the most.
Eukannuba, Purina Proplan,Merrick, Royal Caine, Nutro, California Natural, Solid Gold, Old Mother Hubbard.
If you are shopping for a food, I prefer a meat based listing in the ingredients as the 1st or 2nd listed item. I do not like just straight meals.

What is the temperament of a whippet hound mix?
We are picking up a dog from a rescue mission. They have a very cute whippet-hound mix and the kids love him.
Answers:
I work at a kennel and we had whippets there and they were some of the best dogs! they were very affectionate, loving, and calm... they also do very well in training!
Hounds however are hyper and bark alot at the kennel. They have this obnoxious bark that is very loud, but you can train them not to bark.
I think that your dog will either be very well behaved on its own or will need some training and attention.
Could be any type of temperment. Whippets need lots of excersize. Have you not spent time with this dog yet?
Anything under the sun, there is absolutlly no way to predict the temperment of a mixed breed dog.
The temperament will depend on how the dog has been raised and whether it takes after the Whippet (Sighthound) side or the Hound (Scenthound) side.
Whippets tend to be fairly soft and do well with mostly positive obedience training.
If it has a Whippet neck and head, make sure you buy a martingale collar to walk it on. They can back out of regular buckle collars as their heads are almost the same size as their necks.
Find a local obed. class and take it to classes so it can learn to be obedient and cute.
That's a good question.. Who knows the answer tho?? Could be like a whippet, or a hound, or a mix of the two or the best of both, or the worst of both.. It's a mixed breed dog, there is no way to know.. The only thing you can do is meet the dog, and tell the rescue what you are looking for in a dog, and what you expect, what your experience is and they can tell you if the dog might work for you.. It's impossible to predict the temperament of a mixed breed dog.
I had a Whippet and she was the best pet ever! An extremely loving dog, great with the kids, very intuitive to how all of us were feeling. Not a great dog for teaching cutesy tricks, and never let it out of the house without a leash as they are sight hounds and want to chase whatever they see. As far as a whippet-hound mix, whippets are hounds so more of it has to be great! Everyone that met that dog fell in love with her. Enjoy your new hound!

What is the technique to restrain a dog PROPERLY to have nails clipped?
Answers:
If you take your dog to a groomer or even a vet for a nail trim, they should be willing to show you how to hold the dog -- if you stay in the room while the vet/vet tech trim the nails, you can watch how the tech holds your dog, and how your dog reacts to that method.
I restrain my dogs in the way most vet clinics do it (I think) --
Starting at the front: Stand at the side of the dog (on a table) or sit beside the dog and pull them into your lap. Put one arm under and around the dogs neck/head, and press the neck/head against your chest/shoulder. This will immobilize the head.
Put your other arm over the dog's back and, using that arm to press the body against you, grasp the elbow joint of the front leg. This will also prevent the dog from pulling that foot away from whomever is trimming the nails. The easiest thing to do would be to reverse the dog's direction for the other front leg.
For the rear legs, you can hold the same way (and just let the person trimming deal with the hind feet. You can also put the arm that was going over the dog's back under, instead, and press the body against you. Either way, you may have to hold tight!
Again, this is hard to explain in writing, and would be much easier to understand if you could see it. Nail trims aren't terribly expensive -- it would be worth the $$ to get the technique so that you can do it at home.
Good luck!
Lie the dog on his side. You can keep him in position by gently "leaning" on him with one arm, just enough so he feels you're there. Your hands will still be free enough to clip the nails easily.
take your dog to a vets or dog salon %26 they will do it right please do not attempt to do this your self.
If needed they will sedate it
He He that's funny. All but one of my five is fine and will just let them get snipped. My little one 45 lbs is muzzled.
My moms pug is muzzled, my mom holds his body down and my daughter holds his head in a head lock and the groomer snips. A pug mix.
Do not I mean DO NOT let anyone sedate your dog to clip their nails. Almost everyone clips their dogs nails Nicole I don't know where you get your information from but you not right in your answer at all. I have my groomer do it when she is grooming my dogs, or the vet office will do it for free when they are checking out my dogs.. Or I will do it at home. The best way I found to do it is that I hold my dog while a person is cutting them. They feel safe in my arms so I don't have a problem.
all I have every done is when they are very young pups I would always play with their paws.like when they were laying on my lap or something I would just rub their feet, front and back ones, just to get them used to that feeling.now I just tell them to sit..pick up one paw at a time and clip their nails..for the back ones I have them lay down...and just pick up the rear paws and clip.I don't have to hold them down they just wait until I'm done and then get up and start playing again.
I am a groomer and the best thing for your pet if he/she is that "wiggly" is to let your groomer do it. We charge $8.00, so it is well worth the money to have it done right without you having to struggle with him/her. In some rare cases, the animal does have to go to the vet and be sedated, but only if the animal is highly stressed about having his/her nails trimmed. That eliminates the stress to the animal and ensures that they won't be hurt during the process.
HAHA
OK time for the comedy act
Wrap both legs around the dog (your legs) then pull its one leg up so you can see the nails...
No, wait a minute, better than that get someone to sit on the dog without squashing it...
No actually, talking in a sweet calming voice does help. Sometimes it is a good idea to have them restrained it really all depends on the dogs. Some are no problem at all. One thing is true though and that is if you are very Sweet to them, and manage not to cause them any pain than eventually they do get over the nail trimming fears and aren't bad.
There are devices that groomers that do not have an extra set of hands to help them use. Some involve a set of arms and a harness that also lifts the belly of the dog so it has no traction and can't really do much to push away as there is nothing to push on.
Of all the dogs I have ever had, only one had a problem with having his nails cut and he did it anyway. He would get muzzled and the person would just trim. He had to do it, like it or not.
What is the substitue for a puppy feed for a 7 weeks old pup? I am conscious abt the pet food contamination.?
Want to give something like egg, curds, rice mashed, or cerelac? ( Is it ok?) My friend is feeding her pup on porridge, apple, lentil soup, boiled egg.
Note: I have a black male labrador.
I might buy pet food too but here seen so many cases in my area of pet food contamination. hence worried.
Answers:
Feeding human food is only good if you get the ingredients you are feeding balanced by a vet nutritionist otherwise you may leave out essential ingredients that your dog will need.
Feed a holistic brand one without corn, wheat, gluten, soy and rice protein concentrate and stay away from canned foods as dogs really do not need it.
I have been using a great brand of holistic food called Life's Abundance- formulated by a holistic vet and very nutrient dense and great for your dog in all life stages.
My four dogs from puppy to senior all eat it and love it and are very healthy. You can only get it online so check out my source.
Thank you for caring about your dog and wanting to do the best for your pet.
Your friend sounds like she knows what she's doing! When I first got my dog (although it's a lot smaller than yours... it's a jack russel!) I fed it on porridge and similar soft foods. Rice mashed I never tried but it sounds like a good idea. Young dogs need energy foods, carbohydrates that release energy slowly so porridge, rice, bread and milk mashed together and weetabix are good ideas. You are right to be concerned about pet food contamination, especially as your pup is still so young. I'd advise you to stay away from meat and similar pet foods for the time being. My mum also used to mash up digestive biscuits and mix them with boiling water and bovril, vegemite or marmite. (Obviously let it cool before giving it to him!) Hope this helps.
That's not a balanced diet.. You should feed a balanced diet of kibble. Especially for a puppy so young. He needs a good strong start, and feeding him an unbalanced diet won't do him any justice at all.

What is the strangest thing you've found in the dog house?
Answers:
strawberries. my dog used to pick them and hide em in is house for a midnight snack. for the longest time, i thought slugs were eating all my strawberries...then i was looking out the window one afternoon while doing some dishes. lo and behold, i caught my dog in the act of picking the berries and putting them in his house. hilarious.
a dog
i have never been in a dog house, BUT the strangest thing i've ever seen a dog do was when one of the puppies threw up, the other puppies came and ate it! EWW!! GROSS!!!!
the strangest thing i've found in a dog house was a little child's yellow rain boot, i have no idea how my dogs got it =S
neighbors sneakers, work gloves, and a screwdriver
Poop and hay mixed up from the bedding! EWW!! GROSS!!
I don't have a dog house...my house is the dogs house too! But my 1 year old male brings in rocks and piles them up behind my couch!!
My pampered kids have an indoor "house". They use it to store food and their toys.
I used to have a dog that would take a pair of clean underwear out of the stack of folded clothes and make a hole in them. She would then take them to her house to sleep with. It was weird.
My Stupid neighbor's Stupid kid hiding from his Stupid mom so he didn't have to mow his Stupid lawn. Oh yeah anybody wanna buy my house?
My son's dirty underwear.
Curtains, wall to wall carpeting, a gas fireplace %26 a marble foyer.
My two year old granddaughter! We could not find her. We could hear this muffled sobbing and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. When we finally found her 5 minutes later she was stuck going into the doghouse, but could not back her way out. (My dog is a chihuahua)
a petrefied squirrl that my dog was so glad to finally catch after his 7 years of living (so far)
Pamela Sue Anderson
A skunk.
And it was alive.
It was sleeping in there with one of my cats.
All my dogs have lovely deluxe home made dog houses, couresty of my carpenter father, they have been nicknamed by visitors 'the palaces'. One of my dogs keeps pinching my shoes, but only one of the pair, so if i can find one shoe but not the other, i check 'the palaces'. Another one of my dogs is really sly about pinching my kids soft toys, everytime i go to clean out his kennel, i find about 1/2 a dozen stuffed toys hidden under his bed.
my cat
I actually don't have a dog house, but when I was boarding my dog at his breeder's house he was playing with her puppy who is a month older than him, and one of them would go in the dog house and the other one would jump on top of the dog house and they would bark at each other!
well i would have to say a rabbit witch my dog didnt kill it was living in the dog house with the dog. thought it was strange but after i had thought about it we had owned a rabbit before witch my dog just loved so i guess i can understand why she let a rabbit live in her dog house.
My husband. He's a little strange sometimes.
But he knows where to go when he's messed up ;-)
i found a mansion
p.s. my dog is scooby doo
my younger brother.

What is the strangest thing your dog has destroyed?
Oreo (in the picture) has "eaten" a cell phone and a miniature alarm clock. Really she just chewed them into little bitty pieces.
Please, no sad stories.

I have a friend who lost two hearing aids to his dog. She pulled them off the dresser. Ewww, ear wax!
My 4 month old Dachshund puppy destroyed a foam clown nose just last night. Why I even have a foam clown nose in my home is another story entirely, but -- hey, you asked! :)
my dog ate a blue jay once. and a groundhog. otherwise, he's eaten paper plates and stuff. he's a bit spazzy.
We did emergency surgery on a lab (go figure) who had eaten an antique crocheted shawl, an entire rosebush, and half a bike tire.
She lived, and the day after surgery she was so bouncy, you wouldn't even know we pulled 3 pounds of garbage out of her distended stomach.
My dog Pixie chewed on a chair and one day i sat on it and it just colapsed like nothig!! It was SOOO funny
my dog ate a hole in the wall. literally chewed the wall until there was a hole... dont no how she did it...
I live in the country and our chocolate lab ate our scarecrow! lol Along with countless other things over the years.
Oh another plastic lover!!!
My dog has eaten several phones, pens and even glasses.(My daughters make up)
I guess to get back for leaving him home alone..
Never any shoes or furniture, only things I %26 my daughter really need and care for.and made out of plastic.
My dog, also named Oreo, muched in a pair of new eyeglasses. Had the progressive lenses which at the time were expensive; loss was over $350. She punctured and cracked both lenses, and basically ate the frame.
I had a dog (mixed breed ) that ate all of Genesis right out of the Bible. She also ate the corner off the bed, the railing down to the basement, the window sill in the diningroom.. She chewed shoes, she chewed everything.. That was when we decided that people who told us that crate training was a good idea... they they were telling us the truth ! :) That was nearly 30 years ago, and we just really don't have that problem anymore..
Sorry, you asked. . .
When my daughter was just an infant and I was still nursing her, my German Shepherd, Sarge, got into the cupboard and ripped my breast pump to shreds!!!
My Cairn terriers will chew up anything in their path...they love underwear. lol
well i only had my pup for about 3 weeks and so far he has eaten a cell phone charger, a portable dvd player charger, an easter basket, my manual for the dvd player, chewed through my box spring, my bathroom carpet, my toilet seat cover, a pillow, chews on wood, ate the fake moss out of my artifical tree, my flip flops, my daughter's flip flops, a shoe string, belts, the manual for spider man 3 game, my daughter's book bag, a comb, his food and water dishes, likes to gnaw on my clothes too! i can keep going...oh and he likes to chew on my cat too!!! Wow, I myself didn't realize he did that much damage. It's funny because i have evrything put up he's huge and can stand on his hind legs to grab things off the counter and everything!!! Hope it's a stage that will pass because it really is getting to be too much!!! My children wanted a puppy so bad, now they hate him because he eats their stuff!!!
I was dog-sitting for my aunt and uncle. Their younger dog trashed my shoes, a glove, a stuffed animal, the fringe off two rugs, put a hole in the bedroom carpet... let's see. oh yeah, chewed on some fireplace logs and literally ATE the sleeve of my sweatshirt jacket. (Almost had to go to the vet for that one, but she threw it up.. ugh!) I came prepared the next time I saw her. I brought her a GIANT rawhide bone.
Didn't think it was possible, but our Logan totally destroyed a large Kong toy.
my dog likes to chew on my bras. she eats the band at the cup on both sides straight thru
but i must say the strangest was my old dog, when she was a puppy we left her alone for an hour in our basement bathroom. she chewed thru the wall and when we got home she was on the unfinished half of the basement!
Scotty my rescue Sheltie used my Oak coffee table as a raw hide. My window frames, door frames and wood chairs were are trashed because of him. My son had a ball with little suction cups all around it to make it stick to the wall. Scotty ate everyone of them (About 35 total). I gave him 4 doses of Hydrogene Peroxide to make him vomit them all up. I only saw one in his poop. I was afraid they would stick to his insides if he didn't vomit them but it worked out okay. I did take him in for xrays to be safe.
My dog ate a towel. Its stupid. and we do not know how.
My Pit Emma has eaten Cell phones, pens all the typical plastic things, but I think the funniest thing she has eaten is:
I have/had a small hole in my couch and it contains that fluffy white stuffing. I came home to find that entire living room coated with this white fluffy foam and there sitting in the middle of the couch was my pit looking like Santa Clause. She had a foam beard and hat. Whats even worse is she looked at me like "Do you like what I have done to the house?" How could I be mad???
Electrical cords, books (like novels), magazines...
Fortunately, we never had to have surgery (fingers crossed) and never will.
Aww its Oreo!!! haha!!
Haha the only thing my dog Riley has chewed are like the ribbon on a bunch of flip flops (so I couldnt wear them) and just the edge of a pair of my dad's glasses (they were old though). I was so worried about having her destroying things when I read about jack russells.but she has chewed so much less than any other dog I have ever had. She does like to walk around with my cellphone...but doesnt chew it!
My late Dobe chewed a hole in the side of my mattress and would eat my bed linens. Never touched her dog bed or blankets. Once, I took a blanket from the sofa and put it on my bed (after washing!) and she shredded it in a matter of days -- it had been on the sofa for ages. I couldn't leave shoes around; she would eat the backs and insides. She also liked to check out the contents of my purse and briefcase. Once she ate the ends off a $5 bill and another time she ate my paycheck. (Yeah, the folks in payroll thought that was a hoot.) She would make up for it by leaving me kibble in my purse, briefcase and shoes. Go figure.
I also had a Weimareiner that ate ceramic bunnies and eggs. That dog had a cast iron stomach!
my ring
