She will live in an apartment, she's never had her own dog, but she'd love one. She will be working everyday.

Get her a toy stuffed dog to lie on her bed. Some of them can be quite lifelike.

IF - and only IF, IF, IF, she is one of those rare organized and responsible college students who can do it all at age 19, then consider one of the toy breeds - chihuaha, yorkie, etc. that can live inside - and even be tought to use a kitty box for pottying.
But be fair to your college student - don't get her a pet until she's graduated and earning a good living.
A cat would be more suitable, they are much lower maintenance.
Any Pup requires alot of time I would suggest a cat or maybe a fish.
Absolutely NOT a puppy of any breed. This girl is going to be busy with school and work - not to mention a social life. She won't have time for a puppy. Sounds like she won't really have time for even a mature dog.

I have a 17yo daughter, and I rarely see her between school and sports and social activities her pets would be dead if it weren't for me.
Let the college girl concentrate on being a student and living her life - it's best not to be tied down with the responsiblility of a dog and heaven forbid a puppy right now.

If she isn't going to be home that much I would suggest a kitten. Dogs need a lot of care and attention that it sounds like she isn't able to give them at this point in her life.
i would suggest a cat since a puppy needs lots of attention, and if shes working everyday, i would suggest a cat for now

I agree..You should get her a cat or kitten. I have cats and work 2 jobs. As long as they have food, water, and a little attention, their set. A cat would be much better. Maybe you should try some local rescues/shelters in the area, and you can find a kitty that needs a loving home.

if she's in college now.. who knows wher her life and/or studies will take her... A dog lives for 15 years, besides the fact that she'll be away from home a lot between studeis and socializing - a pet dog will seriously compromise her options in the future - what if she wants to study overseas, or travel or join the peace corps or whatever - who will look after the dog??
if she likes dogs - she can always volunteer at the shelter - there are plenty of dogs that would love the company..
MAYBE U SHOULD GETT HER A ROTTWEILER OR A PITBULL!!!!
Neither- college age, working or in school, is a time of huge life transitions and changes- who knows where she'll be in 10, 5, or even 2 years from now? Especially if she is renting- if she gets a cat or dog and then wishes to move, it could possibly be hard to find a place that allows animals. She should wait a few more years, at least until she's 'settled' or has her own home she owns. Do you even KNOW if she's allowed to have pets at her place now? Does her landlord even allow it/
a cat would probably be the best as dogs require a little more attention. Be careful though and make sure you screen the cats for their personalities as they come in all kinds... just like dogs.
Cats are great, but I like Dash Hounds for inside dogs. They don't shed as much, and they are great companions!
doesnt sounds like she has time for a puppy.. if she would like a dog get and older one that doesnt need to much attention.. or really just get a cat sicne they are sometimes more independent
a dog for her right now i don't think would be good...and a pup needs LOTS of attention to become a good dog...and working everday and going to school...i think a cat or 2 would be better. go to the shelter save a life or 2.
No dog. While we always had dogs and cats as my kids grew up, my daughter wanted a cat. We have a tendency toward calico cats (maybe because we like females?), so we went and got her two calico kittens in her Senior year when she lived with a group of 7 girls in a big house. The whole house loved them and were able to help care for them. The daughter's a doctor now, whew!!!
