What is the best way to train your dog the most basic tricks? *sit, *stay, *come, *down, *heel. housebreaking?

Answers:
The Basics
SIT, COME, DOWN, STAY, HEEL.

SIT
Holding a treat in your left hand just above the pup's nose, gently rest your right hand on pup's rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump. ( you dont want to push hard because if you do the dog will sit every time someone touches him and this is not good for competitive obedience)
as soon as pup sits say in a very happy excited tone "GOOD SIT" and give the treat.
Repeat excersize 7x. then take a play break and move on to something elce.
very young pups should not train for more than a half hour each day
every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. then once pup sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until pup has the new command down pat.

COME
walk away from pup about 10 feet to start. say pup's name and "COME" in a happy voice. once pup comes praise it lavishly have a bit of a play and give it a treat.
Gradually increase the distance you walk away. and eventually once pup knows command only treat every 3rd come. tappering off until he comes every time with out treat using only praise.
this will take a few days to learn if you practice every day.

DOWN
Start with pup in sit. move hand with the treat between the pup's front paws on the ground.
Say "DOWN" in firm but not loud voice.
pup might try and get treat without going down, dont let him have it until he downs.
praise in happy voice "GOOD DOWN"
repeat 7x

STAY
Start pup in down possition. say "STAY" in firm voice. walk to end of leash, backwards. if the pup moves say once only "AP" in a not pleased tone. go back do not say anything. put pup in down again repeat "STAY" walk backwards to end of leash.
pup does NOT get praise or treat untill he stays for 30 seconds, then a minute, then 5 minutes. move times up each week.
after he can do a 5 minute down/stay every time. move on to a sit/stay doing exactly what you did for down/stay.
Once on leash sit and down/stays are reliable for 5 minutes each. drop the leash and walk away from your pup, your back to the pup. about 10 feet away. wait 5 min. recall your dog. with dog sitting in front of you once he reaches you. treat and praise.

HEEL
Please do NOT train with a choke collar. i recomend martin gayles.
with dog on a short leash exactly beside you on your left side say "HEEL" if the dog starts to pull give a correction snap with leash on collar. and recomand "HEEL" the second your dog complies peaise with "GOOD HEEL" in happy voice. and continue to walk , correct, and praise for 30 minutes.

Always end training sessions on a positive note. Never get angry with your pup for not responding to a command. Praise lavishly every time pup responds to a command.
NEVER hit your dog. NO reason is an acceptable reason for physicaly abusing your pup.
Group obedience classes will help with socialization and a good instructor will be able to help with training your dog.

If its a big dog, with food!
Teach one a day. For exzample for sit take a treat and put it over his/her head and say the command sit when they are sitting and praise them. Soon they will get the point. For stay put your dog on a leash and make it laydown and say stay walk a few steps away and if they stay praise them. Walk away and your dog will get the point. For come put on leash tell it to come and if it dosent then pull the leash twards you and say come and reward. For down put dog in sit position and put treat down and make dog lay. House breaking is easy. look under the post about some ones unhosebroken snouzer and read my post. Heeling im not sure about. Hope this helps. Also never go for exzample Daisy sit and if she dosent sit dont go sit sit sit or anything say the command once.
Gary had me use the Click and Treat method.
It worked wonders.
And if you live in Arizona, he works wonders.

I would look at his website:

Just keep at it!
every time they get it wrong don't reward them just walk away and come back and try again in a few minutes.
Never make it a chore, don't let your dog get bored of doing it always try something diff! but not to many diff things at once.
When you want it to sit just use 1 word commands in a strong voice and push there bums down while holding the other hand supporting its chest.
My dog loves the roll over thing, it took us 2wks to get it, i kept rolling her over and saying rollover or if she did it with nowing she was even doing it i would repeat the word, now when the treats are out she can't wait to show her new trick.
everytime you wanna give your dog a treat make them do something for it.
well house breaking is a different one and we are still on that with our youngest though she hasn't used her paper in nearly 2wks so think that nearly cracked it.
take them out every so often in the garden and ever time they do it on the grass really praise them, if they do it in the house don't even speak to them they soon get it. Though with our husky it was a really funny experiance as she really didn't get it in the beginning, she thought that she was getting rewarded for just bending her back legs! then would get excited bout her treat, she couldn't grasp the fact that she had to pee not just bend her legs ha ha.
Hope this helps a little x

For housebreaking all you need is a crate, pencil and paper, and patience.

You need to understand how your dog's bodily functions work to be more quickly successful.

Puppies go to the bathroom on a schedule, it not just a random thing. Their bodies automatically eliminate whenever the gastrocolic reflex is triggered. Stretching of the stomach when the little ones eat triggers the reflex. As puppies get older they are able to overide the reflex and control when they eliminate.

Somewhere between 5 mins-1 hr after eating is when pups will go to the bathroom. About 5-10 mins BEFORE you know it probably has to go (start with 15 min- 30 minutes after eating) take the pup outside and say "go potty right as it starts to go. When your dog eliminates give it praise: tell it "good potty!!!"

Each dog's body is different so it may take you a few observations and trial and errors to get more precise. Now get out the paper and pencil to make a chart and enter time fed/time of elimination (both pee %26 poops). Soon you will know your puppy's bathroom schedules.

Your pup will sniff and circle about 3 seconds before "the act." If you see it sniff and circle outside, tell it to "go potty" and give immediate praise. Eventually saying "go potty" will be the command that makes the pup go.

You should have a special spot outside where you take it to do business every time. Take your pup out every two hours throughout the day. If it doesn't go, put it back in crate and try again in 20 minutes (don't be mad it won't know why--don't be mad at yourself either, it's just a schedule thing--you will learn). Eventually you'll find out what "the" schedule is. It might be your pup can hold for 3-4 hours.

Take the pup outside first thing in the a.m. at the same time, and just before bedtime at the same time each eve.

In the house if you have some mistakes, use white vinegar in a spray bottle to disinfect and remove the urine amonia smell. NEVER use an ammonia product to clean up messes.鈥ㄢ€↖f your pup makes a mistake, it's your fault, you haven't charted the automatic trigger times--so don't show your temper, don't rub its nose in it.

If you are not specifically paying attention to your pup (sitting in your lap, playing with it and *always* being observant of the sniff and circle routine), it should be in the crate.

I'd say in the evening before 7 to 7:30 pm is the last time to drink water for the night.
