What is the best way to rid a dog of ticks and prevent them from reoccuring?

Please help. I find ticks on my dog nearly every other day.
Answers:
Advantix
I'd say ADVANTAGE FOR DOGS. There are other brands, but I like this one.
The best way to prevent ticks is to use a topical or oral drug that will repel them. There are a lot of options out there now, talk to your vet. Ticks are known to pass many diseases on to our pets, so be as vigilant about checking them as you would your children.
The best way to remove a tick is to use a tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin (head) as possible without harming the animal you're workingon. Pull evenly and firmly. once removed, i highly recommend saving the tick for a few days while you watch your pet for any of the common signs of Lyme's disease, or the other diseases. That way, the vet can test the tick to see if they have a disease.
You must be in Florida (where I am) ;-)

We have had a terrrrible problem with ticks since hurricane Wilma. We finalllly won the battle by using Frontline Plus every 3 weeks, vacuuming every day and using beneficial nematodes in the yard--since I refuse to use pestcides.
if your dog is picking up that many tics you need to use
Advantage or other insecticidal stuff check with your vet.
My vet will actually put the stuff on at the office so you don猫t have to buy a whole package and they just charge for the
product
First of all you need to spray your yard with pesticide to get rid of the ticks. I used Triazicide from Wal-Mart and it has worked great so far. My pups were coming into the house with 10-15 ticks everytime they went to pee and now nothing.
Secondly you need to get a flea/tick collar (I use Hartz) or put him on a pill that will prevent the ticks from biting him. Your dog will not always be in your yard and will need to be protected.

Good Luck
The best way to remove ticks from your dog is by using tick tweezers. They are special tweezers designed to remove ticks easily, and most camping or outdoor type stores carry them.

The best way to prevent ticks from getting onto your dog varies.

Most people recommend that, at the very least, you use a monthly flea and tick preventive. Usually those come in a little applicator and go on the dog's back. Some go between the shoulder blades, while other brands are applied all along the dog's back. Personally, I have had much better results with Frontline Plus than with other products such as Advantix, for example. If your current product isn't working, address this with your vet. Maybe a different brand will work better.

If the majority of the ticks occur in your yard, you may want to address the issue as a yard issue, not a dog issue. There are some plants you can plant that will help cut down on ticks. There are also products like Bug Band brand granulated insect repellent (www.bugband.net) that you can put along your flower beds or the edge of your yard, which will help keep them away.

If the ticks occur when you're out with your dog in an area that gets lots of ticks, such as hiking in the woods, you may want to consider using a flea and tick collar in addition to the application of flea and tick repellent. Sometimes the extra protection makes a difference. Bug Band also makes sprays and such that are safe to use on your dog. :)
my vet prefers Frontline, definitely don't use Hertz (I hope thats it i wouldn't want to mislead you) that has been know to cause seizures and kill pets. Whatever you use research it first!
Revolution or Advantage multi have the best reputation for repelling ticks, fleas and preventing a multitude of parasitic infections.
I use Revolution on my dogs.
