What is the best way to stop a puppy from biting?

I've tried holding his mouth shut when he bites and also yelping when he bites and fake crying. any other ideas?
Answers:
You're on the right track with the yelping(make sure its high pitch and kind of shocking to the pup). I've also noticed that if you dont look at the puppy after you yelp, he'll soon realize that if i bite my owner (or anyone else) they won't play with me. Just look away and ignore him.

Good luck!
he is probably just mouthing, all pups go through this stage, to curb it tap him on the nose and stop playing. if you do this enough times he will get the picture eventually. Also get him some rawhide to chew on, he wont need to bite you then!
you could go to a pet store and buy some chew toys. if tries to bite u smack him on the nose and tell him NO!
try not to pull you hand away as the teeth of a dog are slanted slighlty inwards so pulling it out will hurt you even more, i know this sounds cruel but if u put your hand deeper into its mouth when it bites the puppy won't like it so it will think, oh im not going to bite anymore because i get a hand down my throat, give your puppy treats when it is being good and when it bites its toys, that way your puppy will prefer to bite toys rather than you. hope this helps i had a puppy who wouldn't stop biting but after doing this he is now really gentle, dont tap him on the nose as it will give him a better chance to gr4ab your hand, trust me i did that with my dog and he hated it.
i always bite mine back after a lil bit u bite them real good the'll stop
I got one word - Muzzle.
kick him in the asshole!!!
There is absolutely no need to hit a puppy to train it. Yelp or use or low, growly voice and say "Hey" if the pup bites. Either freeze and remain motionless for about ten seconds or walk away and ignore your pup for ten to 20 seconds. This is how dogs act - they warn when something hurts, and if the other dog doesn't get the idea they end the fun. Your pup will soon learn that he gets what he wants by being polite, not by biting.
smack its muzzle, not too hard though, and say "no!" in a DEEP voice..

He might be teething still. Get him some puppy teething toys - Kong makes a wonderful line. Get a few, one for him to always have and carry one with you. When he bites, yelp or cry out until he lets go and immediately give him the toy so he learns what he can chew. If he's more persistent, I put my finger in the back of their mouth where there are no teeth (on the gum line). They don't like this. Good luck!
They have a bottle you can buy at walmart for cheap and then you just spray it on the problem areas that the dog usually bights (i.e. couch, shoes, etc) and it repulses the dog.
Just hit his mouth softly everytime he bites you...Do it in a tiny higher level until he stops...He will never bite when he feels the punishment...try not to hit his noise you can damage him.
The biting is the caused by developing dominance and he is learning to put you in your place. Yelping and fake crying is falling right into his plan as you are exhibiting submissive response behavior to your puppy's biting. Which is what he wants.
Give him a sharp, strong, deep-voiced 'NO' and push him gently but firmly away from you and don't make eye contact, then wait, if he does it again repeat the exercise. If he does it a third time give him a 'dominance roll-over'. Take him by the scruff (as his mother would do) lay him on his side and place your hand across the top of his nose. Hold him there until he stops squirming. When he stops, let him up and tell him 'good boy' in a gentle voice.
Now call a local, reputable training school and take him to Puppy Kindergarten and learn to socialize him properly or you will have bigger problems in the future.
