What is the main active ingredient to look for in flea drops for dogs and what % ?

Answers:
You want a product that contains pyrethrins. Use the smallest amount necessary. There is a product called Frontline that you can get at the vet or at a farm supply store. It simply contains pyrethrins with an added ingredient to sterilize flea eggs so it lasts longer because the eggs don't hatch. The OTC products are lower in concentration than Frontline, so they don't work as well. Some dogs have had seizures from prescription strength flea products.

I'd see your vet. OTC flea meds can be dangerous and even fatal. You really don't know what's in there. Why take a chance saving a few pennies?
First off you shouldn't have to worry about active ingredients and % IF you get flea products from your vet.

OTC flea products are are ineffective and can be very dangerous to your dog. They can cause serious skin irritations, skin burns, neurological issues, seizures and death. No matter what OTC..Hartz, Zodiac, Bio-Spot, Sargents, etc...they all contain a very concentrated, unsafe pesticide..The pesticides in these products go into the bloodstream and can cause problems with the dogs organs and nervous system.
Get a safe and effective flea product from your vet..one like Frontline Plus or Advantage.
