It depends on what you're looking for.

Obviously something that's calm and good with kids. But you have to consider MANY aspects when deciding what breed of dog to buy.

How much time a day do you have to exercise the dog? How much land do you have for it to run around? How often do you want to brush it? Do you have any other pets? Do you need protection? Do you want it to bark a lot? There's a lot.

One really fun tool I love to play around with is on animalplanet.com. It's a breed selector. You answer a few questions, and it picks the perfect breed for you.

Click on the link, then click on "Start Your Search" under Dog Breed Selector.
With 2 small kids we got a boxer, and that is the sweetest dog ever!! The kids could do anything to her and she just sits there. She is 4 now, and my kids are bigger, but I babysit some and she is still the best dog I have ever had or known. She does weigh 70 pounds, but is soooo gentle and sweet!!
I got 3 german shepards. Very protective. Very aggressive. Their number 1. Next comes Rottweilers %26 pitbulls. Thats only if you want a very protective dog.
that's a matter of different ppl i like the German shepherd
i personally think it should be one that was in a pound and was about ready to be put down.

i mean come on don't you wanna save a dogs life?!

OR...
one from a pound again but had children with its last owner before.

those are my bets.
German Shepherd Dog
I would stay away from smaller dogs if you have young kids. An older lab that has calmed down would be good so they won't knock over the kids. Pit Bulls are absolutely wonderful around kids...but you have to raise them right and they must have the proper predisposition or it could be bad. I know you can spread peanut butter all over yourself and if they are raised right they would do absolutely nothing to harm you.
with kids i would get a lab! i got a akita great gurad dog loyal smart he only 5 months real powerful and fast
Cocker spaniels have a reputation for being worse than pit bulls for frequency of biting, so I would stay away from them.

Pit bulls have a bad reputation because when the do bite, they tend to hang on and keep chomping down.

I've had good luck with labradors, but the most important thing is that the dog be raised by affection training - no hitting, only vocal intonations ranging from happy to stern.

Last, I think really young children (under ~7 yrs old) should never be left unsupervised with a dog, particularly when the dog is new to your family. Also, if the kids like to dig around in the dirt outside, be sure it's not the same dirt the dog defecates on -- theres a very nasty parasite they could get from ingesting just a little dirt. Better that they use a coverable sandbox for that kind of play.
A boxer or labrador retriever for sure. I would say go check out the shelters, look at the adults, that way youll know how big there gonna get and see its temperment. youll never realy know with a puppy, how its gonna turn out. and with an adult you will not have quite so much work on your hands, puppies can be a handfull, Beleive me, and im sure your already kept pretty buisy with your kids. plus youll be adopting a dog that probably always gets overlooked by the little puppies!
