What is the difference in the amounts of protein in the dog...?

foods that i have been looking at? the crude protein levels are any where from 8% to 42%. the dog food i use is 21% crude protein. why is there such a huge difference? how much protein should dogs get? is it better if theres is more or less protein?
Answers:
The majority of dry dog foods are around 24 - 26 % protein, which seems to be adequate for most dogs. Anything lower is definitely not good. What you need to look for in a food is one that has meat as its 1st ingredient. And it should have no corn, corn gluten, wheat, beet pulp or any of the other cheap fillers that dogs don't digest well. Some of the best brands out there are Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, Wellness, Timberwolf Organics - if you use any of them, you can't go wrong.
Depending on your dog's need, the protein level can be significant. If a dog has a digestive problem, such as liver or kidney problems, you may want to look into a lower percentage of protein. I had a beagle mix with pancreatitis who was on senior dog food (non-active) because it has the lowest percentage of protein. Anything higher would cause her to have seizures.
If your dog is healthy, and has a normal active lifestyle, the protein level you find in most adult dog foods (around 21%) is significant. It gives them the energy they need.
If you have a high performance dog, or one that burns lots of energy (competitive dog sports, running/biking with you) look for a food with a higher protein. The performance blends of dog food are the best because it has other nutrients that work completely with your dog's system while burning energy.
