What is the best way to train a dog?

Answers:
Learning theory:

Behavior that is rewarded, happens more often.

The sooner the reward is given after the behavior, the sooner that behavior will repeat.

When behavior happens reliably and predictably, it can be put on cue.

I started as a pop and jerk, traditional choke chain trainer. It didn't work very well.

I start being a lure and reward trainer, works much better.

I am easing into total Positive Reinforcement training and I love it. Best of all, the dogs get to enjoy the experience, also.

With punishment based training (choke chains, popping and jerking) if your timing is slow, the dog will know he can avoid the punishment, but is less likely to learn what you WANT.

With Positive Reinforcement, if your timing is off, your dog will just learn a little slower. But at least your dog will still like you and trust you when all is said and done.

And it all exhibits leadership. If you are the one controlling the treats, or the food, or access to outside, you are automatically leader.

Google it...
there are tons of methods to train your dog...
patience/firmness/repetive commands/ give them a treat when they get it right.use one word commands only for the first month.SIT/HEEL/STAY/FETCH etc.good luck
Positive reinforcement
Praise and treat the behaviors you want, ignore the ones you don't.

Of course it's more complicated than that, get a book. Karen Pryor is a good author.

Petsmart has classes that use positive reinforcement. Not expensive, and offers free "go backs" for refresher courses all the dogs life.

You would be wise to invest in a basic obedience course with your dog. Not only will you have professional guidance but you and the dog will likely bond from the close work you do together. Petsmart offers course for around 100 but you can probably find a small local place that offers cheaper course and smaller class sizes.
get him trained by a professional, more like a police dog
there's a book called "no bad dogs" google that.. I lost my copy and I can't write down what I learned here..lol its worth the buy.
If your pet is just a pup,you should start while young by containing it in a large paste board box lined with news paper, and take it out about every 2 hours, let it do its job, then bring it directly back in and don't let it play after job is finished,as it will get confused about why you're putting it out. This way the pet will soon learn that everytime you put it out ,it is suppose to potty. It takes patience, and a strict schedule ,but about two weeks of this and your pet will be potty trained.
I would find a beginning class and enroll in that. they can show you the basics, then you can get more advanced on your own. The local Parks %26 Rec Dept in my area offered classes pretty reasonable. Unfortunately, the one I went to had a trainer that was pretty rough, so I pulled my dog out of the classes, and my friend told me about another place that trained one on one. That worked fantastic.
The most important thing to remember is your dog wants to please you, so with gentle repitition, your dog will learn. When they do the command, praise them like crazy and give a little treat. Never smack them or be rough,,the tone of your voice should be all the dog needs . The time you invest also bonds you and your dog, which is great.
Good for you wanting an obedient dog !
I assume you're referring to house broken--you must have loads of patience-depending on the breed it could take up to six or seven months to be considered fully trained. Usually the first thing in the morning, after eating or playing-your pet will need to relieve himself-be very watchful of him-get to know his moves (pet dogs will start sniffing for a place) and be ready to take him outside. You could also reward him after he pees and poop-before you know it-he will get the message.
start with puppy pads you can buy them at wal marts target and even some gros. stores sell them.ever time he or she uses the bathroom on one pet her also give her something puppy bone or snack.puppys love to make you happy. so you should show it how happy he makes you by using the puppy pads
