What is the difference between a certified dog trainer and not.?

i have three dogs (mutts) who bit a little boy. they are out of control. not mean but too hyper and not disciplined. my fault not theirs. i want someone to train them and then teach me how to keep it up. i am willing to pay but don't want to waste my money. help!

Since you've got dogs with temperament and/or behaviour problems, you need a qualified trainer. Do not go to Petsmart - they're trainers can't handle any kind of behavioural issues. Check at your vet's office - quite often trainers will advertise classes. You can also ask your vet if they have any recommendations. Failing that, go through the phone book and call trainers. Ask them their qualifications, describe your dogs' behaviours honestly. Check out their classes before you sign your dogs up. Any reputable trainer welcomes people coming out to watch their classes to see if you agree with their methods.
Private trainers tend to cost a lot. You can always try PetCo or Petsmart... the big pet store chains tend to have some "dog training" classes that you can take with your dog. I do warn you that you're going to have to do your part, though. Like a child, dogs need consistency. You can't have a trainer come by, teach them things, have them leave and expect the dogs to magically learn that it needs to be long term. I think any GOOD dog trainer will have you get involved as you will have to change the way you are with them. Anyway, good luck! I'd definitely look for some classes you can take with your dog at the big pet stores. :) I've never taken classes there, so I don't know.

If the problem is serious, you may want to dump some extra cash in a private trainer that deals with more serious behavioral issues.
