What is the best way to calm my dog down?

i have a husky who is almost a year old. he is crazy. when we leave he loves to chew the couches apart. he has taken obidence classes and it doesn't seem to help him at all. i have an appt to get him fixed next month but i dont know if it will reallyhelp him settle down. he has a cage that we put him in when he is bad, but i hate leaving him in there when im gone all day. i really dont know what to do anymore with him. i love him to death. he can be a really good dog too, he just loves to chew everything apart and its driving me crazy. any suggestions on how to calm him down?
Answers:
Exercise. Huskies can easily run several hundred miles a day, they are also known for chewing, therefore they make lousy apartment dogs.

Get a Springer or Walky, an attachment for your bicycle and let him go a nice steady loping pace for miles while you ride.

Get him Kongs and stuff it with his food. Get Buster Cubes and any of those other toys to give him his regular ration of food, make it a challenge so he'll use his mind, dont' just hand it to him.

Neuter him immediately ( I see this is in the works)
And take him to obedience/manners training. He needs mental stimulation as well as lots of exercise. We often forget about the mental stimulation. It is as important as physical exertion to bring a dog into balance, if you will.
have u ever tried putting him like inside a cage in your house with a chew toy maybe it will work what i mean about cage is just around him peace
Give him some beer.
use aggression and be assertive with him. there's nothing better than hearing the voice of a male to control a dog's moods/ways
Take him for walks before you leave, nice long walks; this will tire him out and will be healthy for you!

If you can't do that, try playing with him more; he is bored.
I think that getting a new toy will work as well...

OR
get a dog repellent spray from pet store and spray on your couch..
Long runs.
Teach him to run next to a bicycle and run him for at least an hour EVERYDAY!!
More if you can manage it.

Huskies were bred to pull sleds for up to 100 miles per DAY!!!
They need EXTREME amounts of exersize.

They are also one of the smartest dog breeds there is. Consider something like agility, or search and rescue training.

I'm serious about how much exersize they need.
Consider a doggie day care, or a pet sitting service to come and take him for a walk during the day as well as the daily long runs.
The crate need to be a safe haven not a jail cell. Use it only in a positive manner; and put a favorite treat, chew toy (kong or nylabone) in there with him. Safer for him and your furniture.
Or take him to doggie daycare; sounds like he is bored and not getting enough exercise so is making his own fun.
talk to your local vet they might be able to give you sum puppy prozack
Exercise, exercise, exercise. When you got the Husky, weren't you told by the breeder or didn't you do your research and learn that Huskies are very high energy dogs? Didn't your obedience instructor fill you in on this? Think about what Huskies were bred for. Running mile after mile, pulling a sled.

No, neutering won't settle him down. It will take away his urge to procreate, but it won't take away his urge to exercise.

Your dog needs a good run of at LEAST an hour a day, every day, to keep his mind sane. If he doesn't get sufficient exercise, he will burn his energy somehow...like chewing the couch...

Crating him while you are gone is the best thing, for his own safety as well as for the safety of your possessions. Just imagine if he chews an electrical cord and starts the house on fire.

The crate shouldn't be a place of punishment, but instead should be turned into his 'bedroom'. Rather than lock him up when he's bad, put him in the crate with a peanut butter-filled Kong toy or a big raw beef knuckle bone or something similar that will keep him chewing and happily occupied while you are gone.

And, most importantly, when you get home or before you leave for the day, take him for a long jog, bicycle with him, run in the yard, whatever, get him sufficient exercise.
I have no help for calming him down but I can give you a possible reason for the behavior. I have Yorkies and one of them gets up and potties on my bed when we are gone. Someone said that the dog thinks I'm not coming back and is marking the territory to let the others know who is in charge.

LOL I guess I really foil that dog's plans when I always come back. LOL
Start jogging. Huskies are runners and NEED lots of exercise. Lots and lots of exercise.

A tired dog is a good dog.
Dogs get what i call anxiety issues. They are pack animals and when we leave they can't come with us and they get lonely and upset. Don't rush out and get another dog to keep him company cause dogs give each other bad habits. There is nothing wrong with placing your dog in a crate. I assume it's just till you get home from work or go out for a while. Husky's are very active dogs, in fact ours chased the neighbors chickens till he ran them to death . He didn't kill them or eat them-- just running them into the ground. Cages should never be used for punishment but a place for him to rest or for him to have time out from us humans. If he is less then 3 yrs old he will be very active. I gave mine a chew bone and if he tried any thing else i would take a pop can with rocks in it and throw near him. it scares him and lets him know it's not acceptable to chew on anything else. once he gets older it should stop. He's still a puppy truefully.
If you use the crate to discipline, it won't calm him down.

Some dogs have a strong need to chew.

I am concerned that you are unable to give him enough time to exercise him and socialize him. If you cannot care for him as he needs, it would be best to rehome him.
I reiterate some other answers...

EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE!!!!!!!...

This will make all of your problems go away!

Dogs, especially big ones like huskies need LOTS of exercise to be able to relax at all.

I have a Shetland sheepdog, and he only calms down when he is good and tired.

He is taken for about 3-4 long walks per day, and is exercised freely in the yard, where I run him with a soccer ball, and chase him, and jump him (for 30-60 minutes).

He is then given 2-4 ice cubes to munch on for him to cool down.

He is really content after that, and LOVES to cuddle.

I suggest a similar regimen. You absolutely have to make time for your dog. They have needs too! He is only crazy/destructive because he is frustrated, and needs to burn off his energy.

DONT NEUTER HIM! THIS IS NOT NECESSARY! HAVING HIM NEUTERED WILL AFFECT A DOG'S GROWTH, AND WILL NOT HELP YOUR PROBLEM!
Call The Dog Whisperer lol
i have the exact same problem with my husky, who is a pain in the but. just put him in his cage and don't feel bad just say no or bad dog. NEVER HIT A DOG no matter how mad he makes you. and getting him fixed will help i am not planning on gettin mine fixed cause he is a stud fixing him will help oh yeah dont listem to the people saying neutering wont help omg trust me i work at a vet it helps
