If you have had cats most of your life, a chihuahua might not be the best dog for you. They are very nervous and can be high strung, and they need lots of socialization or they will display overly protective behavior. Just because they are small doesn't mean they are nice! There are more dog attacks from chihuahuas than pit bulls yearly.
Research what you want in a dog. Do you like to run or hike, or would you prefer to watch TV? Do you want a tiny dog to carry around or a big dog to scare off intruders? Do you want a quiet dog or a dog that barks wildly if someone even looks at your house? There is a dog for you! Go to different dog food websites, most of them have breed quizzes. Take several of them, and pick the ones that initially appeal to you. THEN reseacrch in depth those particular breeds until you narrow it down to one breed. This dog will be your companion and friend for then next ten years plus, you had better pick the right kind!
The price range depends on the breed, smaller dogs are typically more money, with the exception of extremely large breeds like Irish Wolfhounds or Great Danes.
please look into a shelter for a dog or puppy. im sure youll find one there that would be just as good. its a lot cheaper and your saving a life. a lot of dogs that you get at pet stores come from dogs that are kept in cages all their lives and are bred to early. ive seen ''mom'' dogs that have spinal problems and ones that cant even walk. and its proven that dogs from pet stores are usually harder to house break.
google puppy mills , im sure itll make you think twice.
I have had experiences with male chihuahuas, and they seem to be a bit aggressive. If you plan on having him altered this may help his attitude, and his desire to "mount" everything in sight. I now have a bichon, but she is female. I have heard that the males of this breed are even more relaxed than the females, Wow! She is awesome! No shedding, great with kids, smart, etc. They can be, however, difficult to house train, expensive to purchase and maintain, can have allergies, and you will be doing A LOT of brushing.everyday. All well worth it! Hope this helped.
