ok, so my golden retriever died about a year and half ago, and i am now ready for another dog. This time though i would like to get a smaller dog. I am looking for a dog btn 10 and 30 pounds, so on the smaller size. The dog should be easily trainable, good perky personality, shorter coat, and on the softer side as well, no coarse coats, good with kids, other dogs and cats. Mix or pure breed is ok. If possible have a very similar personality to that of a Golden Retrevier. So far i have been looking at norwichs, but there coat is a little coarse, also westies, i love the look of the shiba inu but i have heard that they very difficult to train overall, with some excepts. A dog about the shiba inu's size with personality like a golden retreiver would be great.

i have a Yorkie/westie see the photo a complete bundle of fun and very loving so in my eyes my little hybrid is the best the reason i got him was because i like both breeds and couldn't make up my mind and yes he has the nature of both breeds so I'm lucky
well my bf loves his JRT and i love all dogs... but try looking at puppyfind.com or go to animal planet and they have soem test u can take and u can learn and read a lot more about dogs... goodluck
a soft coated wheaten terrier. they are medium sized dogs, very light shedders, great personalities. they also now breed 3 different sizes of laberdoodles, mini, med and large.
me personal think chwawas but that's just me
I like the Shibas, but they can be stubborn. Look into Whippets. I groom, a lot of groomers own whippets: because they are sweet, short haired, smart, generally quiet (generally),and get along with other dogs (but they can be rough on a toy breed).
I would like to suggest that you follow my course of action. GO TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY. There are so many loving animals there that are looking for homes. Most of them are not only good with people but with children and other pets as well. My last "child" came from the shelter, he came with a check list from the previous Owner the detailed how he was around kids, other pets, house training and other information.
My last 3 children came from there and I wont have it any other way.
Sheltie...Hands down the smartest dog alive and the best personality of all the breeds.
Go to the humane society and get yourself a lovable mutt, I've had two and both have been wonderful and easy to train. Most shelters fit personalities and help with your selection process.
Well, Maltechons (Bichon Frise X Maltese) are great dogs cuz they are soft, non-shedding, have great personalities, are smaller, they can be good with kids and other pets if they are used to it already, and they are very playful!
Shelties (aka. Shetland Sheepdogs) also fit the description of the dog you are looking for but their fur will only be soft while they are smaller and then it gets a little more coarse, but they are extremely intelligent and really easy to train!
I hope this helps!
An Australian Cattle Dog. They are amazing with kids and have short, soft coats. I have one right now, and shes the bestest. =)
Depends on what you expect from the new dog.
I'm a vet and I'd certainly rule out the shiba inu( hates cats and sometimes problematic with children)
Why not go for a shepherd kind of dog, sheltie, border collie( if you are active enough), easy to train because they're intelligent and eager to please.
good luck with whatever you choose, obie
Hi. Sorry to hear about your dog.
We have Black Lab/ Huskies. We have two. They are great dogs. Very loving. Love kids, only bark if necesssary..however, they are larger than what you are looking for. Very smart also. They are the best!
Bichon Frise - powder puff loveable dogs
Personally I find most small dogs pretty dumb, I don't think most will measure up to your golden retreiver. The only small dogs I've ever seen with any personality (other then yipee or lap doggy) were Shih - Tzu's
I know how you feel right now...we had a wonderful golden retriever for six years before we had to put her down because of her epilepsy. That was horrible.
After she died, we also started looking for a smaller dog with a golden's personality. Well, we ended up with a new breed of dog called a goldendoodle. They are a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle. They are awesome dogs because they have the personality of a golden retriever, and yet they don't shed, plus they don't have many of the health problems that golden retrievers have (hip displasia, epilepsy, ect.). However, they are large dogs...but there are now miniature goldendoodles, which are 30-45 pounds, some may be bigger or smaller. I know that is larger than what you are looking for, but they are just wonderful dogs, and I swear they act just like a golden retriever, personality wise! Good luck!
I have both small and large dogs. If you want a great ,loyal, protective, companion, smart dog, get a german shepherd!! If you want a great, loyal, companion, pretty smart, dog that is impossible to house train, then get one of those smaller dogs .Hope you get the dog you are looking for.
Of course I would recommend a chihuahua but I see you'd like a dog bigger than them... so I'll give you some links to breed selectors that I took before I got my chi. I had fun doing these and they helped me pick out the perfect dog. Good luck!!!
